It’s usually more flattering in hand knits to keep any gathering above an empire waist, so that the gathered “side” of the fabric is over the bust. Then this can be combined with shaping that gradually skims outwards to the hips. Making changes to this style of shaping is very simple, you can simply work more shaping on the increase or decrease row at the empire waistline. When shaping is worked either through a change in stitch patterns that results in a different gauge, or through increases and decreases worked into a particular stitch pattern it is usually best not to try and alter the amount of shaping.
It’s entirely up to you whether you choose to change the shaping and silhouette of a garment or just adapt the shaping enough to make that silhouette work on your body, but it’s nice to be able to mindfully make those decisions in order to get the effect that you actually want. dependent on emphasising certain areas over others. What you emphasise is entirely up to you, and should be balanced with the style of the garment. Generally speaking visual emphasis is created by either visual interest in the forms of stitch patterns, colour or other details; or by extreme amounts of either positive or negative ease.
Obviously this is only an option for small changes. If a larger alteration is required, including extra room in the upper arms between underarm and shoulder the rate of increase or decrease in the sleeve cap (or the area of a yoke that covers where the sleeve cap would be) can be increased so that more stitches are increased or decreased without changing the length. Another option that can work for some styles of sweater is to add extra stitches at the top of a sleeve cap, or level with the shoulder point on a yoke style, which will create a puffed sleeve effect.
