While it’s easy to fixate on the chests made from crotch mahogany and fine veneers, furniture catalogs of the 19th century offer chests in the common whitewood, which could be spruce, fir, magnolia or tulip poplar. However, a survey of auction records, furniture collections and museums show that some woods were more common than others. Mahogany of some sort is perhaps the most common species, though some of these so-called mahogany examples might be made out of woods that merely look like mahogany until they are under the microscope.
So as I planned the projects for this book, I was torn. My gut said I should stick with species that were used for campaign furniture but are not currently endangered. Oak, walnut and (occasionally) birch show up in the furniture record and in catalogs from the period. But that approach would ignore an important aspect of this furniture. Many of these exotics – mahogany, teak and camphor in particular – were used because they have special properties. Mahogany resists the worm. Teak is incredibly water- 40 campaign furniture repellant.
If you are determined to use a Swietenia in your work, I recommend being prepared for the worst. Its grain is interlocked, so planing it can be difficult without a sharp iron and a closely set chipbreaker. If you are a machine woodworker, you will find that you have the best luck with a combination of spiral carbide cutterheads and random-orbit sanding. If you aren’t set on using a Swietenia, there are other non-Swietenia woods out there that will fool most people into thinking they are mahogany, including many African species in the Khaya genus.
